Frequently Asked Questions

What is IPL?

IPL (Intense Pulse Light) is a safe non-invasive light based technology used to perform various skin treatments, including permanent hair removal, rejuvenation treatments, vascular therapy, pigmentation correction and acne management.  An IPL machine emits light at specific wave-lengths which are targeted at specific chromophores depending on the treatment type.  The light is absorbed by the chromophore and is converted into heat energy which destroys the target area through thermal damage. The surrounding healthy tissue remains untouched and the body's natural skin repair mechanisms then remove the damaged tissue.

How Does IPL Permanent Hair Removal Work?

Light is absorbed by the pigment in the hair, which is then converted to heat. The hair shaft conducts heat down the hair follicle to the stem cells that are responsible for hair growth, which are then destroyed by the heat. Permanent destruction to the follicle can only occur if the hair is in the active growing phase (Anagen).

IPL VS. Laser?

IPL shares some similarities with laser treatments, in that they both use light to heat and destroy their targets. They enter the skin slightly differently, IPL scatters into the skin so it can treat a much larger area of skin per light pulse resulting in a more rapid cost effective treatment. Laser is a direct beam of light so it covers a smaller area. Lasers use a single wavelength (colour) of light which typically matches only one chromophore, and hence only one condition. IPL uses a broad spectrum that when used with filters, allows it to be used to treat several conditions.

How many treatments will I need?

On average most clients will require between 8-10 treatments to achieve up to 80%-90% reduction in hair. Hair decreases and becomes finer from the first treatment. Maintenance and touch ups are recommended thereafter every 1-2 years.

Does this help with the reduction and appearance of my in-growns?

Yes. During your course of treatments the hair will become finer and the amount will reduce. The treatments will also help with the appearance of scarring and redness from in-growns as well.

Is it painful?

You will experience a light flicking sensation similar to that of a rubber band. We are able to adjust the energy levels of the machine so that you are comfortable during your treatment.
